All Seven LawsLaw II of VII

Do Not Blaspheme God

אִסּוּר בִּרְכַּת הַשֵּׁם

The second law prohibits blasphemy — cursing, dishonoring, or speaking with contempt toward God and His holy names. Just as we instinctively protect the dignity of those we love, this law calls us to guard the honor of the One who gave us existence.

The sages teach that this prohibition applies not only to outright cursing but to any manner of speech that treats the Divine with mockery or contempt. The seven divine names specifically protected under Jewish law — including El, Elohim, and Adonai — are covered by this commandment.

There is a deep connection between this law and the first. One who truly believes in God naturally honors Him. Blasphemy often arises from a failure to grasp the profound reality of the Divine — that God is not an abstract concept to be debated, but the very ground of all being.

This law invites us to cultivate a posture of humility and reverence in how we speak about ultimate things. In a world that often trivializes the sacred, it calls us to restore a sense of the holy — to recognize that some realities deserve to be approached with care and awe.
